Boating Accidents

Stay at the scene!

Operators of boats involved in a boating accident are responsible for staying and taking action. Law prohibits boat operators from leaving the scene without assisting, performing first aid to the victims, or reporting the accident to the proper authorities.

Report the accident immediately.

According to Florida law, boat operators are responsible for reporting accidents to the appropriate authorities. However, it is your responsibility to report any boating accident that you are involved in as soon as possible if any of the following conditions are present:

  • An injury that requires treatment beyond first aid
  • Death or disappearance of someone under the circumstances suggesting that they may be deceased or injured
  • At least $2000 in damage to the vessel or personal property

Boaters are encouraged to report accidents to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the county sheriff, or the police chief of the municipality.
