What customers say

I'd been putting off getting my California card for two summers. Took this on a Sunday afternoon and had my certificate before dinner.
Diego P. · Long Beach, CA
Studied 90 minutes, passed first try, had my temporary printout ready for the launch ramp the next morning.
Sofia M. · Lake Tahoe, CA
The California-specific chapter was super clear about the new 2025 rules. Felt like the course was actually built for our state, not just a Florida copy-paste.
Jamal R. · San Diego, CA
Took it on my phone at the kitchen table while the kids did homework. Course is the right length — not padded.
Erin C. · Sacramento, CA

FAQ

Questions, answered

Is your course CA DBW-approved?
Yes. Our California Boater Card course is approved by California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways (DBW) and is NASBLA-accredited. Upon passing, your certificate of completion is what CA DBW accepts to issue the official California Boater Card.
Who has to have a California Boater Card right now?
As of January 1, 2025, every operator 35 years of age and younger needs the card to operate a motorized vessel of 15+ HP. The age window expands every year — by 2028 it's required for everyone regardless of age.
How much is the card from California?
California DBW charges a $10 issuance fee in addition to the course fee. We handle the issuance flow — once you pass, follow our prompts to submit your application to DBW with the fee.
Does the California card expire?
No. Once issued, the California Boater Card is a lifetime certification. You don't need to renew, retake, or pay annual fees. One-time process.
Is the course actually different for California vs other states?
Yes — we built a California-specific curriculum with chapters on California state law, Mussel Fee stickers, delta-specific navigation, and CA-specific signage. We don't sell you a one-size-fits-all course with a fresh sticker on it.
What if I don't pass on the first try?
Unlimited retakes at no extra cost. Plus our 100% pass guarantee: if you don't pass within 90 days of purchase, we refund you in full.
How long does the California course take?
Most students finish in 1-2 hours. You can take it in one sitting or spread it out — progress saves automatically.
I rented a boat in California recently — am I covered?
Only if you completed a NASBLA-approved course AND submitted your application to CA DBW. A rental shop's day-of paperwork doesn't substitute for the official Boater Card. If you're going to boat in CA more than once, the card is worth it.
