Information from third-party sources
We may receive information from public databases, marketing partners, affiliate programs, and data providers to support targeted advertising and fraud prevention.
How we use your information
- Facilitate account creation and authentication
- Deliver the courses, certificates, and services you purchase
- Respond to inquiries and provide customer support
- Send transactional emails (receipts, course progress, certificates)
- Send marketing communications about our courses — including reminders when you leave a checkout unfinished, and offers to upgrade a temporary certificate to a lifetime one. These are sent to customers and people who began a checkout, and you can stop them at any time using the unsubscribe link in any such email or the unsubscribe page
- Display personalized advertising
- Evaluate the effectiveness of our courses and the Site
- Comply with legal obligations (e.g. reporting to state boating agencies)
How we share your information
We share personal information with the following categories of recipients:
- Payment processor: Stripe, for processing payments and fraud prevention.
- Email service: Resend, for sending transactional and marketing emails.
- Hosting: Vercel and Supabase, for serving the Site and storing your account and progress data.
- State boating agencies:when you complete a course and earn a certificate, we transmit the information required by your state's boating safety regulator (e.g. Florida FWC, California Parks).
- Analytics and ad networks: Google Tag Manager, which loads Google Analytics, Meta, Microsoft Clarity, Google Ads and similar providers for measuring traffic, conversions, and retargeting.
- AI assistant: OpenAI, which processes the questions you type into Captain Kevin, our in-course study assistant, in order to generate an answer. Do not enter personal information into the chat; it is not needed to answer boating-safety questions.
- Video hosting: Cloudflare Stream, which serves the course videos and receives the technical request data needed to deliver them.
- Error monitoring:Sentry, which receives diagnostic data when something goes wrong — typically the page, the error, and the browser and account involved — so we can fix it.
- Accessibility widget: UserWay, which powers the accessibility toolbar and stores the display preferences you choose with it.
- Affiliate marketing programs: when you purchase through an affiliate link, the referring affiliate sees aggregate referral data (not your personal details).
We may also share information during business transfers, mergers, or acquisitions.
Cookies and tracking
We use cookies and similar tracking technologies to operate the Site, remember your preferences, attribute affiliate referrals, and measure traffic. See our Cookie Policy for the full list of cookies we use and how to manage them.
Data retention
We retain personal information as long as necessary for the stated purposes or as required by law. Certificate records may be retained indefinitely to support state regulatory requirements. When no legitimate business need remains, we delete, anonymize, or securely isolate the data.
Security
We implement technical and organizational security measures appropriate to the risk — encrypted transit (TLS), encrypted database storage, access controls, and audit logging. However, no electronic transmission over the Internet or information storage technology can be guaranteed to be 100% secure.
Your rights
You may:
- Review, change, or terminate your account at any time
- Withdraw consent for data processing
- Unsubscribe from marketing communications — use the link at the bottom of any marketing email, or the unsubscribe page. Transactional messages tied to a purchase — receipts, certificates, password resets — continue, because they are needed to deliver what you bought
- Request access, correction, or deletion of your personal data
To exercise these rights, email support@takemyboattest.com. We respond within 30 days.
Do-Not-Track
We do not currently respond to Do-Not-Track browser signals, as no uniform standard exists for them.
U.S. residents
The categories of personal information we collect about U.S. residents include identifiers, commercial information, internet activity, and geolocation data. We retain this information for as long as you maintain an account. We may sell or share information with retargeting platforms, social networks, data analytics services, and affiliate marketing programs.
Children
Our courses are intended for individuals old enough to legally operate a vessel in their state (typically 14+). We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can delete the account.
Updates to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as needed to maintain legal compliance and reflect changes to our practices. We will notify you of material changes via email or Site notice.
